The Purple School Bus Murders, Geza Tatrallyay’s latest murder mystery novel, has the protagonist narrator go on a walk in snowy rural Vermont late one winter afternoon. The sideroads take him past a purple school bus parked in a field that he has walked past many times before but never looked inside. This time he feels an inexplicable urge to do so and finds the corpse of an older woman in the back of the bus with a Bowie knife stuck in her chest. As he rushes home with snow coming down in sheets, he questions whether indeed he saw the corpse. He goes back only to find a pickup truck in the ditch with its driver asking for help. Suspecting that this might be the murderer, he reluctantly gives in. An accident happens and the plot takes off from there, as our protagonist tries to unravel the identity of the murdered woman, and in the process comes upon other murders, falls in love and unmasks a Russian paramilitary group. This is a thrilling tale, with lots of jaw-dropping twists and turns that keep the heartbeats of readers in overdrive.
